Tree branches with snow - by Tony Karp
Tree branches with snow

It doesn't snow as much here in Virginia as it did in New York City. We've been pretty lucky, as the snowfalls we've had so far have been mild and only lasted a short time before melting away.

But if you catch the newly-fallen snow, you will get scenes like this one, taken from a bedroom window.

The Hobbitt says that she can see faces and little creatures in the various clumps of snow.

To me, it looks like an old Japanese print.

A bug's life - by Tony Karp
A bug's life

When we lived in Queens, we had a tiny little garden behind the house.

I raised bamboo and the Hobbitt raised sunflowers.

One day, I was shooting close-ups of the flowers and I saw this ant, lost in this beautiful yellow universe.

Electric Swan - by Tony Karp
Electric Swan

This rare swan was photographed in Flushing Meadow Park, in Queens, NY. It's also the site of two Worlds Fairs, Shea Stadium, the tennis stadium, an art museum, and a large lake that you can walk or jog around.

I'm not sure what makes these swans electric. Being in New York, it's probably something in the water. But that's what they say about the bagels as well, so who

Observatory time - by Tony Karp
Observatory time

It's the summer of 1959 and I'm in Los Angeles taking pictures for NBC Television. Los Angeles has extremes when it comes to weather, alternating between fire and rain.

This is in Griffith Park. It's hot, the sun beating down. The funny-shaped building is the observatory. A man is silhouetted beside it. So I point my camera toward the scene, and toward the sun, something that we are told not to do.

And this strange landscape, like a scene from hell, is the result.

Vatican figure - by Tony Karp
Vatican figure

When we were in Rome, we climbed to the top of St. Peter's basilica. My son had done it, so I had to do it, too.

It's a long and dizzying climb and there's a feeling of vertigo just as you reach the top and, instead of handrail, there's a hanging rope to hold onto for support. But I looked around and saw Italian ladies, in long pointy shoes, carrying shopping bags, climbing these tricky stairs with no effort at all. There's quite a view when you get to the very top. All of Rome is spread out before you.

Halfway up, there's a large outdoor terrace and, what else? A gift shop. This clay figure was mounted on the wall. On the computer, I added the colors you see here, as well as making the lighting more dramatic.

Sunset at the Palazzo dei Consoli - by Tony Karp
Sunset at the Palazzo dei Consoli

Gubbio is a little town nestled in the hills of Umbria in Italy. We arrived here on a quest that started in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, in a room called the Studiolo, built in the 15th Century by a duke who lived in Gubbio.

We finally arrived in this little town, where we spent several days. This is a sunset across the center of the town and the Palazzo dei Consoli.
